Dear distant travelers and seekers,
Welcome to my first ever Online Workshop, the very foundation of the Extreme Journalism series. Where ever you are, my goal is to offer a similar, intimate experience to the five week programs that were held at my Enchanted Studio in Albuquerque.  I have designed this program so that it feels like I am right there with you by offering mp3 files and video when ever possible.  I look forward to working with you and I sacrifice.jpghope you will be inspired to share with other kindred spirits through the Tribal Councils, otherwise known as Group Forums.  Introspection is not valued in this world, so consider yourself a pioneer, a rebel, a revolutionary.  We know who we are and we like it this way.  It’s time to tell it like it is.  Step out of your comfort zone and into the shadows.  Join my posse.  Together, we will light the way.
No experience necessary
Come inside; it’s beautiful in here.
If you ever need more support, please contact me at

Initiation: Rites of Passage
Initiation:  This is the foundational workshop that is designed for all levels and is the recommended entry, or threshold, into the inner world of Extreme Visual Journalism.  This information is not provided in any Workshop or Retreat booklet previously published (
www.julianacoles.etsy.com ), and will not be presented in any other of my Online Workshops at the Institute of Extreme Journalism.  This workshop contains everything the beginner or advanced level Visual Journalist will need to know to begin or deepen this practice of combining words with imagery in a book of self dialogue, transformation, and healing.  I will guide and support you in every step of this 5 “week” journey as you discover:

- how to choose a book, ( includes video!)
- the necessary supplies and materials for mixed media expressions,
- how to prepare your creative space,
- the philosophy and definitions of terms unique to my process of self discovery,
- recommended  reference materials & library for books on the multitude of subjects discussed,
- How to begin
- weekly assignments utilizing mixed media to combine journal writing exercises with image making
- “homework” assignments to support each exercise and develop this process as an ongoing practice
- special videos explaining techniques and processes
- PDF files to download workshop material to read at your leisure
- Mp3 files of most of the text to download and listen to while you work!
- Tribal Council:  Group forum questions to encourage the shared experience which is an important aspect of this inner journey.  You are not alone. (Though I cannot respond to everything, I monitor this group for safekeeping.)

Discover the value of self dialogue in this five week introductory adventure of Extreme Visual Journaling.  Scared of paint?  Don’t know how to get words into your art journal pages?  Explore numerous tools for self expression as we integrate writing exercises with image making assignments utilizing mixed media in the safe container of a book to uncover a personal mythology.  An extreme journal can be a blank journal, scroll, record album covers sewn together, a beautiful book hand bound by you, a notebook... anything you want it to be.  For this workshop you will need your openness and willingness to explore your rich interior through art and words as we focus on process, not product.  Participants will be encouraged to integrate their own techniques, visions and interpretations of exercises with a special emphasis on the combination of text with images into a single work. This Process will help loosen you up and free self imposed limitations.

Tribal Councils

Much of the vision for this class is to connect a community through their creativity. Each class session, or chapter, will represent a diverse collective of individuals with a broad spectrum of artistic and life experience with which they bring to the group.  In working with common contextual themes such as self portraits, vision letters, found object collages and narratives, the group is united in their individual search for inner and outward connection. This will be a safe and supportive environment for you to reclaim what was lost, stolen, pushed aside, forgotten, abandoned, buried, strangled, stomped down, beaten down, tamed, quieted, silenced, taken away, violated, abused.  Celebrate what is uncovered, in all its tragedy, beauty, and glory.  Your Visual Journal will be your reference book for soul matters;  a secure place where you will be prompted to face your own experience by making that experience a tangible image through my mixed media techniques of combining words with images in the safe container of a book for transformation and healing.

Welcome, to the Revolution
